PATINA GALLERY - SOUL - STIRRING WORKS

Patina Gallery is full of visual surprises and that's just what owners Allison (left) and Ivan Barnett have been up to for the past dozen years - showcasing fine, museum-quality craft that is beautifully out of the ordinary.

Housed in one of the oldest gallery spaces in Santa Fe, Patina Gallery is filled with contemporary  jewelry, vessels, turned-wood objects, sculptural mobiles, and so much more.   Every surface is a feast for the eyes.

Indeed, soul stirring works.

SANTA FE FABRICS - TEXTILE DELIGHTS

                                                         Photos by C. Whitney-Ward

Nancy Arnold,  owner of Santa Fe Fabrics, has filled her wonderful store with  texture, color and beauty - gorgeous fabrics and notions from around the world.  Her philosophy is pretty simple -  if you're going to spend hours and hours sewing something,  begin  with beautiful  fabric.

But where to begin?  There are so many luscious choices. Yummy dupioni or charmeuse silks, organic fabrics, oil cloth,  taffeta,  vintage kimono panels, velvets, including white for dying, ikats, Australian aboriginal cotton prints, even Colcha cloth for indigenous New Mexico embroidery.

And there are buttons...

And ribbons ...

 And pincushions...

Lots of patterns and wonderful advice.

What do your customers think about Santa Fe Fabrics?
 "Well," says Nancy, "one customer asked if she could spend the night;
she just didn't want to leave!"

Indeed, this is a very happy, colorful and addictive place.

TREEHOUSE PASTRY SHOP & CAFE - SANTA FE

                                                       Photos by C. Whitney-Ward

Well, this popular all-organic, vegetarian breakfast/lunch cafe isn't actually perched in a tree. It's tucked into an industrial-style loft compound with metal exteriors the color of burnished adobe.  And when you step inside, the open and soaring space is filled with light, colorful paintings  and very, very friendly folks behind the counter.

Just about anything you order will be delightful. I think Deborah Madison -  author of  Local Flavors - summed it up beautifully:

"There’s something about the food [at Tree House] that is so clean and simple – it does not try to impress you or create a headline, but its so good and pretty
and it sparkles with this freshness!"

I stopped by for breakfast, which was a treat. They raise the bar when
 it comes to homemade granola.

And the made-to-order Pupusas - corn masa griddle cakes filled with black beans & jack cheese - were wonderful, each bite dripping
 with a lovely red salsa.

Their cupcake reputation is legendary, but they also offer a tasty selection of just-baked pastries as well.

Next visit I'll stop by for lunch and give their Bird House
 Veggie Burger a whirl...
