THE SANTA FE OPERA GUILD - THE BEST "TICKET" IN TOWN

"Join the Opera Guild," a friend counseled, "it's the best ticket in town!"

And she was right. Throughout the year, the Guild plans wonderful social and educational events that are beautifully organized and fun. I'm proud to say that I'm a graduate of Opera 101 - a two-part class easing neophytes into the delightful mysteries and magic of opera.  Taught by the charming and wonderfully-funny, Oliver Prezant - he's the Musical Director of the Santa Fe Community Orchestra - the first class - at Collected Works - had us delving into the language of arias and the methods behind operatic composing.

The second session - held at the opera house rehearsal space - was pure fun. We learned  operatic lingo like: leitmotif, recitativo and singspeal,  and all about how the magnificent costumes are designed for each opera - the process begins a good year and a half out and there are 65 costume designers behind the scenes for each opera season.  During the last hour of class we actually created and staged an abbreviated opera (of sorts) - some of us wore costumes and the rest wrote the dialog. It was a hoot. Oliver Prezant is a genius teacher!

Here are costumes from last season's Madam Butterfly that were on display. The detail work is amazing; something you just never see from the audience.

AN ANGEL IN THE "HOOD" - SANTA FE

                                                                                  Photos by C. Whitney-Ward
Santa Fe is filled with astounding visuals and not all of them are in galleries or museums. Some of these wonders appear when you least expect them, while driving down a neighborhood street, for instance.

Color & texture galore.

DOODLET'S - FIFTY YEARS OF DELIGHT

Doesn't everyone need just a little bit of whimsy in their life? Like a fancy, dancy steering wheel cover that makes you smile every time you take to the road..

                                                       Photos by C. Whitney-Ward

And speaking of smiles. If you're not up to one, this smile-on-a-stick can do it for you.

For more than fifty years DOODLET'S, has been creating magic for  anyone who steps through their door.  Opened in 1955 by the legendary Theo Raven, the store changed hands this past summer, purchased by Lisa Young who remembers her first visit to Doodlet's when she was only ten years old. "I fell in love with Doodlet's. It was a magical place filled with fun, whimsy and the unexpected. It's such an honor to carry on its tradition as the heart of Santa Fe."

And Doodlet's has books, wonderful children's books, gift books and books with rich story lines and lush illustrations like: Esterhazy - The Rabbit Prince by Irene Dische and Hans Magnus Enzensberger, illus. by Michael Sowa. The story is simple and charming - it concerns a royal dynasty of very small rabbits (they grew small because they ate chocolate rather than veggies), and it spins a tale of love amid the fall of the Berlin Wall. It's a keeper.

The book will launch Doodlet's first adult
